Whether it is raising funds or educating others about your organization the key move is to share your story, not just your stats. Psychologists have discovered stories make facts more memorable up to twenty-two times more than just plain data.
Why do people remember stories, or narratives more than statistics/data? The answer resides in what our memories are most likely to retain. How much more likely? Well, one example would be a Stanford University study on students. Students were 63% more likely to recall a story, compared to 5% recalling statistics. Additionally a Harvard Business School study found the impact of a story fades around 33% in a day, and statistical recall declines much more rapidly, dropping aournd 73%.
So, track and have your statistics, but outside of grant applications and funders specifically requesting them, don’t rely on them alone if you want donors to remember you.
