Your time is already probably stretched too thin so let’s keep it short and informative.
- You were not within the requirements stated by the funder. Close enough is not a thing. Applying when not within the parameters conveys you either didn’t do your research, or are ignoring the funders guidelines. Neither are a good look for you or your organization. If you aren’t sure about the guidelines call or email the funder with your questions prior to application.
- No relationship or prior contact with the funder. You don’t have to be besties, but them knowing you/your organization prior to seeing your application definitely helps. Be respectful of their time but make sure you aren’t just one more of many, many funding requests from unknown entities.
- You didn’t follow directions. Sounds simple, but as someone who has reviewed funding requests I can tell you it’s a bit surprising how, let’s say ‘creative’ some applications are. Sloppy applications, or embelished to fit the criteria are a sign that you/your organization may not be ready for funding. Funders are thinking not just about impact, but also about reporting by those receiving the funds. If you can’t get the application right, it’s an early red flag for possible reporting challenges.
